Rowton Castle Shropshire

Shortly before Christmas, Racheal and Jamie invited us all to step back in time when they hosted their magical Rowton Castle Shropshire wedding. An exclusive-use Shrewsbury venue, with 17 acres of tranquil grounds, Rowton Castle is located about 7 miles from the market town and in the heart of rolling Shropshire countryside.

Historical Rowton Castle Shropshire

This 17th century, Grade II* listed, castle has a long and colourful history dating back to 1234. Rowton Castle has stood in the grounds for nearly 800 years and still shows the work of many periods. The foundations are old and the central core is thought to be Tudor but subsequent generations have added and taken away.

A family home for much of its time, the Lysters owned Rowton Castle for 400 years. On the death of Lady Charlotte Lyster it passed to her sister’s son, Montagu Corry. When he died unmarried, the castle passed to his nephew, General N. A. Lowry Corry, who eventually sold it to Major A. E. Lees. Rowton Castle was later sold to the Royal Normal College for the Blind before work was started to convert the castle, by now a ruin, into a luxury hotel. The hotel opened in April 1989 and the current owners acquired it in 1997.

The Ceremony

This Shrewsbury venue is licensed for civil partnership ceremonies in a number of locations within the castle and grounds. Racheal and Jamie were married in the magical Cardeston Suite which can seat up to 110 guests. The room is adorned with magnificent chandeliers and, for our couple’s wedding, was festooned with fairylights hanging from a seasonally-festive tree.

The hotel offers 19 en-suite rooms, all individually styled. Seven of the rooms feature four-poster beds. All bedrooms have a fully-equipped bathroom, television, telephone and free wireless internet. Other extras include tea and coffee making facilities.
